For Valentine’s Day – When There Was Romance

Written By : Thomas Purcell

February 11, 2013

Hey, pallie, what the heck happened to romance?

I use the word “pallie” in deference to the great Dean Martin. A few summers ago, just before the annual Dean Martin Festival in Dino’s home town of Steubenville, Ohio, I decided to compare today’s hits with his.

I started with the No. 1 song on Billboard Magazine’s Hot 100 list, “Hips Don’t Lie” by Shakira. This song was a hit, no doubt, because of its eloquent lyrics: Nobody can ignore the way you move your body, girl

And everything so unexpected — the way you right and left it

So you can keep on shaking it

No. 2 on the list was “Ridin’” by Chamillionaire, a rap performer. Here’s a little taste of that song’s poetry:

Tippin’ down, sittin’ crooked on my chrome

Bookin’ my phone, tryin’ to find a chick I wanna (slang expletive)

No. 3 on the list was “Promiscuous” by Nelly Furtado, a song brimming with love and affection:

You expect me to let you just hit it

But will you still respect me if you get it

Ah, modern romance. Things sure have changed since Dino dropped off the charts. Now I know why: Romance is dead.

Whereas the top three hits above celebrate human nature at its most base — wiggling one’s hips to stoke male arousal, looking for “chicks” to satisfy your urge, or wondering if a fellow will stick around after he samples the goods — Dino’s simple music spoke to the heart.

Consider the lyrics to “Amore”:

When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie

That’s amore

When the world seems to shine like you’ve had too much wine

That’s amore

Amore means “love” in Italian, a mysterious and magical energy that every human longs for. Love is the basis of many of Dino’s songs. It’s nowhere to be found in the three hit songs I just referenced.

In 1964, when The Beatles’ new sound was making them the most popular band on Earth, Dino knocked “Hard Day’s Night” out of the top spot. He did so with “Everybody Loves Somebody,” an old-fashioned song that resonated with all age groups:

Everybody loves somebody sometime

Everybody falls in love somehow

Something in your kiss just told me

That sometime is now

Whereas many of today’s hit songs celebrate fear, anger and cynicism, Dino’s songs celebrate sweetness and innocence. His songs are idealistic and uplifting. They are ROMANTIC.

Dino’s songs celebrate the subtle dance of the spirit between a man and a woman — the magic that occurs when two complementary natures collide.

They celebrate mystery — the deep interest and curiosity a man holds for a woman and a woman for a man.

They celebrate hopefulness — they focus on the future, on the hopes that one day a special person will enter your life and sweep you off your feet, a person you will love forever.

The simple, intense lyrics of his song “Sway” sum up this longing well:

Other dancers may be on the floor

Dear, but my eyes will see only you

Only you have the magic technique

When we sway I go weak

I know Dino had his peccadilloes in his personal life, but his music remains untainted. With every passing year, as coarseness seeps into our culture a little more, his songs hold more power over me.

We need to get back to the spirit of his music — the spirit of romance. I can’t think of a better day to do so than Valentine’s Day.

All we have to do is observe older couples who fell in love years ago, when Dino was still king of the charts. I marveled at the eloquence of such couples at the Dean Martin Festival a few summers ago.

As the Dean Martin impersonator began to sing — a fellow so convincing you’d think the old crooner was there in the flesh — they sauntered to the front of the stage, holding hands, then began to slow dance. They began to sway with a sweetness and easiness that couples knew long ago.

When there was romance.

.....but you really can’t go wrong with Dean Martin in his prime, doing what he does best – singing songs, playing drunk, and ripping off women’s clothes in the blink of an eye.

Thoughts on The Silencers

Film July 16th 2010 by Jesse Kowalski

Loosely based on the series of Matt Helm novels by Donald Hamilton, “The Silencers” features Dean Martin as erstwhile counter agent Matt Helm. Not to be confused with the counter agent at Northwest who lost my luggage last week. Helm isn’t a secret agent who spies and stuff, he just causes problems for other spies. Which is good work if you can get it. Helm was formerly with the organization I.C.E. (Intelligence and Counter Espionage).

Released within months of the premiere of his popular long-running TV show, “The Dean Martin Comedy Hour” in 1966, “The Silencers” is the first of four films starring Dean Martin as Matt Helm. Highly successful when released, “The Silencers” was followed the same year by “Murderer’s Row,” in the next year by “The Ambushers,” and two years later in “The Wrecking Crew” from 1969.

The beautiful and talented Stella Stevens co-stars, looking better than ever. Victor Buono, who I will forever remember as the mutant Fat Man in “Beneath the Planet of the Apes” (1970), plays the Chinese bad guy Tung-Tze. Music is presented by Elmer Bernstein, the composer of “To Kill A Mockingbird” (1962), “The Ten Commandments” (1956), and “Leonard Part 6” (1987). The famous opening credit sequence involving a parade of buxom beauties dancing amongst the titles features “Guest Star” Cyd Charisse.

Our adventure begins with Matt Helm in his swinging bachelor pad, dozing in a large, round, rotating bed. Helm is dreaming about the simple things – a cowgirl in a bikini, a woman fishing in a swimsuit, and a swordswoman in a bra and fishnet stockings. He is, after all, the photographer for Slaymate magazine. Upon awakening, the bed transports Helm into another room, raises up in the air, and gently dumps Helm into a pool filled with bubbles. Helms’ assistant Miss Kravezit – Miss Lovey Kravezit – hands her boss a bottle of Scotch. Some exposition follows which informs the viewer about Helms’ employ with Slaymate and his semi-retirement from I.C.E. Helm’s boss at I.C.E., James Gregory, who incidentally played alongside Buono as General Ursus in “Beneath the Planet of the Apes,” tells Helm of a fiendish plot labeled “Operation: Fallout,” which has been hatched by the caricature Tung-Tze. Tung-Tze’s organization, the BIG O, the Bureau for International Government and Order, plans to… do something… described in vague terms… which involves a missile and perhaps a can of Low-Cal Egg Foo Yung… or something. Don’t worry – all will be made clear 90 minutes into the film.

Matt Helm then goes somewhere to do something, does that thing, and returns home to find women’s clothes strewn about his living room – what you and I would call a messy roommate, but what Matt Helm affectionately refers to as a “treasure hunt.” He locates said “treasure” in his bedroom and asks her “Have you been vaccinated?” I guess she didn’t have the answer he was looking for so she tries stabbing him, but his buddy Tina, played by Daliah Lavi, walks in and shoots her. It turns out she wasn’t a treasure after all, but an agent from Big O! Tina tells Matt the place is surrounded. Not one for being boxed in, Matt retrieves his knife-shooting camera. You read that correctly. Helm shoots one of the Big O agents outside with the camera then judo chops him to death and drives off.

Tina and Matt make a plan to head to Phoenix, because someone heard someone may be doing something there, and they book a room at the oddly named Phoenix Hotel, where organ music plays poolside and Stella Stevens reveals just enough to keep things interesting. Perhaps the Tempe Hotel in Tempe was booked. (Interesting note: I was in Arizona in the summer of 1999 tooling around in a dune buggy with my friend Jayna when her Teen Trouble Alert wristwatch went off. She insisted we had to fly to Phoenix on the back of an eagle carrying a bucket of water in order to take care of some official business. Luckily, I was able to spend the night at a nearby Best Western, verifying that Phoenix does have other hotels.)

Back at his room, Helm undresses Tina and finds a gun in her bra. You and I might lecture Tina about better places to conceal hazardous devices, but Matt Helm giggles and compliments her “booby trap.” That man has got something I want!

Matt and Tina decide to take in a show at the Slaygirl nightclub. Tina tells of a tape being transferred from a Big O agent to Gail Hendricks’ (Stella Stevens) date via stripper. At what point in the tape transfer chain do you think Matt Helm gets involved? Yes – the stripper. But Gail beats him to the punch and grabs the tape first. Any normal guy would take Gail back to the I.C.E. headquarters for interrogation, but Matt Helm, aided by his crafty mind, decides to rip Gail’s dress off in one quick movement, leaving her in only a bra and underwear. I have never seen anything like it. You really have to see this to believe it. I mean, I’ve seen babies born, strangers die, and Superman turn coal into a diamond, but this split second removal of clothes is the most miraculous vision I have ever seen, or will ever see.

The next morning, Helm makes plans to sneak into the Big O headquarters to stop something bad from happening. Helm’s boss outfits Helm with a reversible gun that shoots the person holding it, and a sports coat with hand grenade buttons. Helm takes off with Gail to find the hideout. After a slooooowwww 15 minute romantic interlude in the film where Dean shines as an amazing drunk and Stella sinks as a horrible drunk, they make it to the hideout. Finally, Tung-Tze explains that he is going to hijack a missile to blow up a nuclear testing site in Alamogordo in order to spread a nuclear cloud, which will make the US blame Russia, thus beginning World War III. The audience finds all of this out literally in the last 10 minutes of the film.

Helm escapes with a judo chop, shoots a machine gun, does a roll, shoots more machine gun, and throws a grenade. The End.

Many dismiss this film as a sad parody of the James Bond films or a trashing of the more serious Matt Helm spy novels, but you really can’t go wrong with Dean Martin in his prime, doing what he does best – singing songs, playing drunk, and ripping off women’s clothes in the blink of an eye. You really do have to check out that scene. It’s on Youtube.

Ah, Deano - there'll never be another one like him.

Hey pallies, likes has we gots some great Dino-devotion for all youse Dino-holics as Dino-amore month marches forward here at ilovedinomartin. Today's Dino-devotion is an energetic essay on our Dino's fabulous show from the pen of Mr. Mitchell Hadley at the classic TV blog, "It's About TV." Mr. Hadley wrote these excellent kick off to the Classic TV Blog Association's variety show blogathon....and of course what coulda be better to lead off with then our Dino...the classiest of classey TV hosts of the greatest variety show to hit the small tube.

I was a bit taken aback that Hadley begins his reflections by sayin' that he was a fan of Jerry Lewis, but that said, he goes on to extoll the many and varied venerable virtues of our one and only Dino, includin' Hadley's confession of how much our Dino offered huge comfort and support to his mother durin' a major illness she faced in the mid sixties.....a wonderful tribute to the transformin' power of our most beloved Dino!

Mr. Hadley's poetic prose is well matched with a stunnin' number of fabulous Dino-vids that Mitchell shares with his readership. It will certainly be worth your time to soak in each and every delightful Dino-thought that Mr. Hadley offers as well as those great vid moments from the great Dino-show.

Likes dudes, it is truly delightful in this very very special month of Dino-amore to finds such an amorin' tribute scribed by in-the-know TV reviewer Mr. Mitchell Hadley..summed up in two of his best turned Dino-phrases....

"Dean Martin was an entertainer worth appreciating," and "Ah, Deano - there'll never be another one like him." And, likes the "Hollywood Palace" Dino-tale that Hadley relates in certainly worth the price of admission for this whole Dino-effort...it's one that this Dino-holic likes had never ever heard before!

ilovedinomartin sends out our kudos to Mr. Mitchell Hadley of ""It's About TV!" for such wonderfully wise words on our King of Cool...certain to lead many into deeper, purer, and truer devotion to our main man. The Dean Martin Show (1965-1974)

Posted by Mitchell Hadley

I was always a Jerry Lewis fan, so if I had to choose between Martin and Lewis, I would have chosen Lewis. But I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for Dean Martin, primarily because of my mother. She had been quite ill in the mid 60s, and she told me once that during that illness, the Dean Martin Show was the only TV show she enjoyed, the only one that made her laugh, and that she had regretted not sending him a letter telling him about that – he did, after all, end each show by urging his viewers to “keep those cards and letters coming in.”

I don’t know whether or not that letter would have reached Dean, or if it would have meant anything to him if it did. It’s a moot point now, of course; both he and my mother have been dead for many years. But it did teach me a couple of things: first, you should never hesitate to let someone know when they’ve made an impact in your life. The people you think are most inaccessible may well be the ones who most need to hear from you. And second, that Dean Martin was an entertainer worth appreciating.

At one point in 1967, Dean Martin was the highest paid entertainer in show business. His show had just been renewed by NBC for not one but three years, at a cost (to the network) of $34 million. Added to the $5 million that Dean was already making*, the man they called the “King of Cool” was sitting pretty.

*$750,000 each for three movies (not including his share of the profits), $825,000 for his records, $150,000 for three weeks at the Sands Hotel, and $2 million for the past season of the show.

It hadn’t always been this way. After the tumultuous breakup of Martin and Lewis, Dean had watched as Jerry made it big with a string of solo movies. Martin’s movie career, by contrast, laid an egg - a bomb called 10,000 Bedrooms. He’d received $250,000 for that movie, but that wouldn’t do him much good if he wasn’t able to turn things around. That turning point came with a dramatic role in the movie The Young Lions, which Martin eagerly accepted even though it paid him almost $200,000 less than he’d received for 10,000 Bedrooms. He then followed up with his own string of hits – Rio Bravo and Some Came Running – and all of a sudden Dean Martin was hot stuff again.

The Dean Martin Show began in 1965, and Martin’s easygoing style made the show an instant success. In retrospect Dean seems a natural for his own variety show. There was only one problem - doing a weekly series would be too much like work. "I only left the house four times last year and made a million dollars," Dean joked, and between the movies and the records, who needed work? William Harbach, producer of ABC’s Hollywood Palace, tells Kliph Nesteroff a wonderful story about trying to get Martin to host an episode of Palace (prior to the NBC series) that illustrates precisely Deano’s style, and the appeal it had for viewers:

One of the guys that Nick [Vanoff, Harbach's partner on Palace] and I wanted on the show because he belonged on the show was Dean Martin. He didn't want to do it. We asked him several times. He always said no. Finally I said to Nick, "What if we ask him twenty minutes before the taping?" All he has to do is go to the dressing room, put on his dinner jacket and look at the cue cards to see if he wants anything changed. He'll just do the show and go right back to the golf course. No rehearsal, just bang. We asked him and he said, "Yeah, I'll do that if I don't have to do any goddamn rehearsal."

When NBC approached Martin for a weekly series, he exhibited the same lack of interest. Still, they pressed, so he gave them his terms. He knew they'd never accept them - he wanted a lot of money, and only wanted to show up for the actual taping - no rehearsal. They said yes anyway. He told his family, "They went for it. So now I have to do it."

There's no question that Martin's laid-back attitude was one of the show's major selling points. It was Dean the way people wanted to see him - dressed in a tux with a red pocket hanky, cigarette in one hand, drink in the other, so relaxed you wondered how he could stand up. Martin didn't put on airs, and that's why people loved him. He'd enter the show running down stairs, or sliding down a pole, making it all look cool. He was just himself - to be anyone else would have required too much work.

But really - you don't want to read someone writing about Dean Martin. Not when you can actually watch him, right?

This skit with Jonathan Winters is one of my favorites; it's a great example of how Dean's lack of rehearsal made the show that much funnier. Of course, nobody could really prepare for Jonathan Winters.

Here's a similar sketch from a few years later. Look at how Martin replies to Winters' "I just buried my brother" line - he has this wonderful "Did I just say that?" reaction. That's what made Dean Martin cool.*

*Notice how Dean's always playing himself in these bits? He doesn't bother to change into something that might be more "suitable" for the sketch. I mean, when was the last time you sat next to someone in an airplane wearing a tux?

And here's Bob Newhart, reprising one of his famous monologues with Dean as his foil. I don't know about you, but I've never had someone that well-dressed wait on me in a department store.

Don't think that it was all just comedy, though: Martin had some of the business' greatest entertainers as guests. Here he is with the great Ella Fitzgerald.

And another medley - this one with Bing Crosby.

One of the highlights of each show was his banter with longtime accompanies Ken Lane.

Of course, things weren't always as they appeared:

And it's also true you never knew just who might show up.

The Dean Martin Show ran until 1974 - when the very format of variety shows was on life support. By then the "Celebrity Roast" feature had taken over, and it was in that format that the show would continue, as a series of specials, for another few years. I prefer to forget about those years; you don't see the real Dean there. By then his drunk act had become dominant, almost forced. The easy charm of the early days was gone, and soon Dean would be as well.

The decade of the 60s, for all its fame, is difficult to pigeonhole. It began as a continuation of the 50s, in style and substance, and at the moment it seemed poised to morph into something new – modern, streamlined, space-aged – it all came to an end on a street in Dallas. By the end of the decade it had become something else entirely, a cultural French Revolution, awash in libertines and protestors and druggies, which would continue into the early part of the 70s.

One could say, then, that the identity of the 60s rests between two bookend decades, beginning like the 50s and ending like the 70s, with perhaps two or three years in the middle which it could call its own. In that sense, you could argue that 1965 was the model year of the 60s, the year that the decade might, under other circumstances, have most resembled. The drive to the moon was in full swing, the surging tumult hadn’t yet boiled over, the war still garnered widespread support.

It was then that Dean Martin’s show premiered, and I would suggest it serves as the perfect bridge to connect the times. Watching the show’s progression through the years, one sees sideburns grow longer while skirts grow shorter, pop standards mixing with rock (and more than one artist painfully trying to remain relevant), and the devil-may-care attitude of the Rat Pack sliding into the hedonistic end of the decade. We can see it all, the end of one era and the beginning of another.

When Martin hosted the Hollywood Palace back in June of 1964 he made a comment that, I think, illustrates his ability to live in both these eras. Introducing the Rolling Stones, a group he may or may not have ever heard of, he commented that "I've been rolled while I was stoned myself." He could just as easily have said that in 1974, and he would have been just as much at home saying it.

Ah, Deano - there'll never be another one like him.

What I learned at Dean Martin’s Drinking School.

Posted on February 9, 2013 by emceerae

Dean Martin’s Drinking School presented by Martin Dronesclub.

Like countless young men and women before me, as I’ve grown into my mid-twenties, I’ve been burdened with the question of “what am I going to do with my life?” However, all the while I HAVE been “doing,” I just haven’t been paying enough attention. So last night I took the proverbial bull by the horns, saddled up and headed back to school. Not just any old school of course because last night I had my first class at “Dean Martin’s Drinking School” at Margret on Dundas. Now, you may ask, what could you ever learn at a school like that? More than you’d think. Let’s review.

Margret is a wonderfully freaky little bar that’s tucked into Toronto’s west-end Junction neighbourhood. I won’t describe it in too much detail because the images in this blog can do that for me. I highly recommended it if you’d like to stray from the ordinary. It is a perfect fit for the “swinging bachelor pad sleaze” of “Dean Martin’s Drinking School,” as coined by the event’s producer Martin Dronesclub.

2952 Dundas Street West in Toronto.

Martin, the DJ and Dean of the drinking school (huzzah), poured on the tunes from the velvety era of tobacco smoke filled rooms in the Dean Martin heyday, all whilst staying sober himself; an admirable trait. The two songs that I “shazammed” from the night were “Spooky” by Andy Williams and “Sunshine Superman” by Mel Torme’, but Shazam misheard the latter as the well-known version by Donovan.

So, the first thing that I learned at “Dean Martin’s Drinking School” is that I’m smarter than the Shazam app, because even though my “tags” that I’m referring to say Donovan, I was able to remember the name Mel Torme’ the next day, despite having drank much fine Scottish ale over the course of the evening.

mmmmm…

On that note, the second thing that I learned at school last night was that the fine Scottish ale is actually quite fairly priced at Margret. It is common practice for many bars to mark up the prices to upwards of quadruple the liquor store cost. In Margret for example, a can of Stiegl (a deceptively delicious Austrian brew), which retails for $2.45 for a 473 ml can in Ontario’s LCBO (Liquor Control Board of Ontario for all you non-local types), is priced at $7.25 in bar; a 196% markup. Margret also used to sell 40’s of malt liquor, such as Colt 45 and Olde English. Before their disappearance from the bar this past year, they were retailing for $14; a similar jump in price from the store cost as the Stiegl. The 40’s have since been replaced with large bottles of comparably premium beers, such as the aforementioned fine Scottish ale, Innis and Gunn. A 750 ml bottle retails for $6.65 in the LCBO stores, while in Margret it goes for $14, which is not as large of a price gap. Despite being less liquid than a 40 of malt liquor (1.18 litres or 40 ounces, duh), the improved quality of brew and lessened detriment to your life makes the Innis and Gunn a superior choice at the bar. The markup sits at a cozy 110%, which is exactly the amount of effort I give every time. Well done Margret, well done. I therefore learned that in drinking two bottles of Innis and Gunn I saved no money because I spent $28 + tips on them. I also learned how to figure out the markup percentage on the beers, so that has to count for something…although my math could be wrong for all I know. But I digress.

Dress code in effect. Snow storm also in effect.

Dress code was of course in full effect, but as you can see by the snow covered sign, Toronto is currently getting pounded by a heavy duty snow storm that started yesterday.

My backyard this afternoon.

So there wasn’t exactly a whole lot of people there to adhere to said code. I think we all learned that snowstorms (or other things such as responsibilities) will prevent people from going out to a bar on a weeknight, which is an astounding revelation. Regardless, those that did trudge through the snow and show up were dressed for the occasion (for the most part), as the photographic evidence shows (or doesn’t).

Myself, dressed to impress.

I personally was looking forward to the time warp back to the Dean Martin days and took full advantage of the opportunity to sleaze it up. I even wore these dandy socks which my mom so excellently surprised me with earlier in the day.

Dandy socks.

Yes, I am 26 and my mom still buys most of my clothes, but would you complain? No. Just look at those socks! They were extremely appropriate for being in the company of stars such as Dean Martin…

Dean.

Sammy Davis Jr….

Sammy.

Frank Sinatra…

Frank.

…and the incomparable Brock Johnson.

Brock.

Overall, looking back, I didn’t actually learn much of anything at “Dean Martin’s Drinking School” last night. I did, however, have fun, and that is (at least) half the battle. Assuredly, as these educational sessions continue throughout the year (and fall on nights when the weather isn’t so arctic), more and more people will enroll in this crash course in “swinging bachelor pad sleaze.” Personally, I’m pleased with my decision to enroll and am glad to be sharing my experience with you. I recommend that you join me at the next snazzy session on the first Thursday of every month. A drink with ol’ Deano can’t hurt and you might even learn something along the way (doubtful). Now, it’s time to change out of last night’s clothes, including these dandy socks. Until next time, that’s amore’.

Yesterday In Dino-history: February 24, 1976

Hey pallies, likes so so sorry to be late sharin' this very very important date in all of Dino-history. In was likes yesterday, February 24, in the year of our Dino that our most beloved Dino legally cut the strings to wife numero three, Catherine Mae Hawn, and ever more woulda be free to be his ever cool, hip, and randy swinger self.

Likes I found the "TV Movie Screen" cover so so revealin' that our great man the day after he said I do to Cathy, was already havin' second thoughts 'bout his marriage to her. At least, on paper the marriage lasted not quite three years.

Our Dino crooned that he was "Not The Marryin' Kind" and indeed after he became free of Miss Hawn, he chose not to tie the knot 'gain 'though in an filmed interview he alluded to the possiblity of returnin' to wife numbero duo, Jeanne Biegger, but that was not to happen. This Dino-date was verified by the pallies at the Dean Martin Timeline, which you can check out if you clicks on the tag of this Dino-gram. Dino-rememberin', DMP

It has the same title as the Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis film and some of the same plot elements, but it’s not a remake.

Hey pallies, likes the news that ilovedinomartin shared  yester-Dino-day 'bout what seemed too too cool to be true, a remake of our Dino and Jerry's classic comedy, "The Stooge," featurin' Mickey Mouse and Roger Rabbit is actually a "real development proposal for a Disney/Pixar movie."  This great news comes from pallie Harry over at "Ain't It Cool News," who we first sourced yesterday.

The words come right from the mouth of Mr. Gary K. Wolf, creator of the wonderful Roger Rabbit cartoon character...and is posted below.  Wolf shares that.... "It has the same title as the Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis film and some of the same plot elements, but it’s not a remake."  So it won't be exactly likes that wonderful Dino-flick, but even so think of the tons of attention that will be drawn to our most beloved Dino simply by the big screen event havin' the same title of one of our Dino and Jerry's best screen efforts.

This will certainly bring pallies of all ages and stages into the Dino-fold of deep, pure, and true Dino-devotion!  So likes dudes stay tuned for more news as this proposal moves forward.  ilovedinomartin thanks Mr. Harry and Mr. Gary K. Wolf for clarifyin' what seems too cool to be true, to be really really true!  To checks this out in it's original format, simply clicks on the tag of this Dino-gram.  And, likes pallies how cool to have this news breaks durin' our Dino-amore month, 'cause this new project will certainly brings more and more amorin' of our Dino!  Dino-always, ever, and only, DMP

Gary K Wolf updates AICN regarding THE STOOGE starring Roger Rabbit & Mickey Mouse!!!

Published at: Feb. 19, 2013, 6:10 p.m. CST Share On Facebook Twitter

Hey folks, Harry here with an update from Gary K Wolf himself. He wrote me just a few short minutes ago to clarify the story he posted upon his blog! Now let's jump right on in with what Gary has to say.

Harry,

There’s been a lot written today about the new Mickey Mouse/Roger Rabbit movie The Stooge.

There’s been some question about the story’s veracity. My fault. I posted this on my blog under the pseudonym Walter Windchill, the gossip columnist character I created and use to disseminate fake news from Toontown. I use Walter and his gossipy tidbits to promote my forthcoming Roger Rabbit novel, Who Wacked Roger Rabbit? Real news I usually blog under my own name. In this case, I simply forgot to change over.

Here’s the true scoop, straight from the rabbit’s mouth.

The Stooge is a real development proposal for a Disney/Pixar movie. It has the same title as the Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis film and some of the same plot elements, but it’s not a remake. The storyline in this Stooge is quite different.

This movie, which will be all animated, has nothing to do with the sequel to Who Framed Roger Rabbit. They are totally different concepts and projects. It’s not a case of making one instead of the other. In an ideal, rabbit-centric world, Disney will make both.

The Stooge development producer Erik von Wodtke came up with the story and wrote the treatment. He showed it to me hoping that I would see how special it was and would be interested in coming in on the project. With that, he did succeed. I love the idea of a Mickey Mouse and Roger Rabbit musical buddy comedy. This is a co-star pairing made in cartoon heaven. Two iconic cartoon characters playing off one another in a story that has the heart and emotional soul of films like Wall-E and Toy Story. What Disney fan wouldn’t want to see that?

It’s a big year for Roger Rabbit. It’s the 25th anniversary of the film. Disney is releasing a commemorative Blu-ray edition in March. My third Roger Rabbit novel, Who Wacked Roger Rabbit?, comes out in November.

All of which gets two big thumbs up from me, two ears up from Roger, and two….well let’s just say that Jessica’s up for it, too.

Art director Doug A Sirois has been working on Stooge concept art. What I’ve seen so far is sensational. I will be involved in the project in a writing and creative capacity. Erik is currently talking to a number of top-flight screenwriters and directors. Watch my blog. I’ll keep fans posted on Stooge developments. From now on under my own name, not Walter’s.

Mickey takes on the Dean Martin role

Hey pallies, likes I'm guessin' dudes that today's Dino-devotion falls into the category "if only it was true," but whether today's Dino-news is true or not it certainly certainly is the coolest of cool Dino-notions. From the coolster blogster pad, "Ain't It Cool News," comes news from a guy tagged Harry that pallies in Hollywood are thinkin' 'bout remakin' that Dino and Jerry classic, "The Stooge," but instead of real folks to taken on the Martin and Lewis roles, they'd be given to beloved cartoon characters Mr. Mickey Mouse and Mr. Roger Rabbit.

Now likes I'm sayin', I'm guessin' this is just some funnin'...but it likes does makes me thinks 'bout the real possibility of remakin' on Martin and Lewis classics with cartoon characters 'cause likes we know both our great man and his partner Jerry are bigger then life themselves. Anywho, thoughts this was a great bit of Dino-fun that woulda be greats to brighten 'another day in our great month of Dino-amore.

Thanks to Mr. Harry at "Ain't It Cool News" for passin' this bit of Dino-fun on to their readership. To view this in it's original format, likes simply clicks on the tag of this Dino-message. Dino-desirin', DMP
Mickey Mouse as Dean Martin, Roger Rabbit as Jerry Lewis in a feature animated remake of THE STOOGE?!?!?!

Published at: Feb. 18, 2013, 3:53 p.m.

Hey folks, Harry here.. Got an email from a new AICN spy calling himself ERIK, that over on Gary K Wolf's website, he is who wrote WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT?, and he delivered quite the scoop last night. So much so that he even signed off as Walter Winchell. Here's Walter, I mean, Gary K Wolf's scoop:

The movie is called The Stooge. It will be based on the classic Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis movie of the same name. The story has the emotional empathy and sensibilities of Wall-E and Toy Story. It will be a (G) Rated Pixar type animated musical buddy comedy. Mickey takes on the Dean Martin role, Roger, who is already regarded as a comic genius in France, takes the Jerry Lewis part.

The film incorporates five specific locations from the Disneyland park. It also introduces the Toon Train, an exciting and interesting way to travel through Toontown.

The film features real-life people. Walt Disney costars. Orson Welles makes an appearance.

The packaged Development Proposal is currently being evaluated by Disney and Pixar. Meetings are happening! Directors and writers are being evaluated.

Alright, so this isn't in the Greenlight category, but in the dreamland category of development. As for THE STOOGE with Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis... Well that's a fun flick. Here's the trailer for Norman Taurog' comedy:

In many ways, I can see this as being the perfect vehicle for Mickey Mouse, who has lost some of his audience connection. He just doesn't seem to be the hippest thing these days. Well, that was the plot for THE STOOGE, Dean Martin's character was a Broadway performer that just wasn't performing up to snuff and is advised to get himself of STOOGE, enter Jerry Lewis. As for bringing this all to Disneyland - I'm hearing that element is involved in TOMORROWLAND, the Brad Bird project, so it'll be curious to see how they employ that as a setting. Right now this is one of those possible maybes that's going on behind the scenes. I'm just curious how they got Paramount to let them use the title and basic plot structure. Perhaps it is amazing what AVENGERS money can do?

Dean Martin's voice makes me think of very rich cocoa.

Hey pallies, likes how I simply loves to go searchin' back into the 'net archives for wondrous moments of Dino-amore that ilovedinomartin has missed the first time 'round.  Today ilovedinomartin goes to Miss Becca's blog pad, "A Noodle In A Haystack" for her Wednesday, August, 5, 2009 post where havin' heard "difficult news" she turns to our Dino for solace and comfort.

Miss Becca confesses that this is the first time that she has come to our Dino in such a time of need...and to her it is indeed still a Dino-mystery why she has, but then she speaks such Dino-truth sayin'... "I guess I just needed to hear his very solid, very steady voice.."  How wonderful to know that Miss Becca has reached that point of knowin' the transformin' power of our Dino!

6 Followers & Dean Martin

I am delighted to announce that A Noodle In A Haystack now has six followers! Just wanted to share....

Now on to more interesting things (for you, at least) that are actually pertinent to this site.

My mind is still reeling a bit after hearing some difficult news, and a little while ago I suddenly felt the need to hear Dean Martin sing. This has never happened before. I've never particularly cared for Martin's singing voice until just recently, and I don't know why I wanted so badly to hear him now. I guess I just needed to hear his very solid, very steady voice. Random fact: Dean Martin's voice makes me think of very rich cocoa.

I love this photo. Seriously, smoking has never looked this cool since the 50's/60's.

Friday, February 15, 2013MY NUMBER 1 FAVORITE DEAN MARTIN SHOW S.E DVD MOMENTS

MY NUMBER 1 FAVORITE MOMENT FROM "THE BEST OF THE DEAN MARTIN VARIETY SHOW:SPECIAL EDITION" DVD IS...

VICTOR BORGE'S MUSICAL PHONETIC PUNCTUATION

This skit always has me laughing hard and at times has me sing along to the songs. Victor Borge teaches Dean how to sing a song with punctuation marks and they both do a medley by singing hit songs by making the punctuation sounds. The noises and hand jesters for the punctuation marks really really make me cry while laughing. Dean and Victor both seem to be having a ball and Dean nearly spits at Victor a few times while making the noise. All the songs they sing are all classics and hearing them in a new way makes me want to try singing them that way. Heck, sometimes they miss a lyric while making the noises. This skit has me roaring with laughs every time I see it, teaches me a new comedic method in singing and on top of it all my Grandma loves this skit a lot and she too loves Dean as much as I do.

http://youtu.be/lQ91SVKryYU

Those are my top moments of my "Favorite Moments From "The Best Of The Dean Martin Variety Show:Special Edition DVD". Other moments include Dean and Bob Newharts first skit together,Jimmy Stewart doing impressions,a hoedown with Roy Rogers,Jack Benny and his own Ding-A-Lings and Ann Margret singing a duet with Dean. They're are all good skits too but these are my favorite and yes the DVD is at least worth a look for fans of Dean and his show. Coming up next I'll be doing another Dean Martin related list and a special thanks post for a special Dean site for supporting my count down when that list is finished.

That door is like a box of chocolates or a present.....

Hey pallies, likes times to return yet 'nother time to our Dino-amorin' pallie Mr. Tyler Michael for his countdowb of fav moments from  ""THE BEST OF THE DEAN MARTIN VARIETY SHOW:SPECIAL EDITION" dvd.  Likes we are now at Ty's second most fav moment...and it is a montage of  wonderful moments when our most beloved Dino opened the infamous "closet" to see who or what was behind the door.

Our pallie Ty is likes so right on the Dino-mark when he sez, "That door is like a box of chocolates or a present, you never know what you're going to get or who's behind door number 1."  Likes it was always so cool to be waitin' to see what ultra ubber mystery lied behind that door.

ilovedinomartin 'gain salutes our pallie Ty at his namesake blog, "HOLLYWOOD MOVIES AND TV REVIEWS BY TYLER MICHAEL," for this wonderful series of posts puttin' his readership onto our great man in this great way.  Can't wait to find out what Ty's most fav moment is!  To checks this out in it's original format, simply clicks on the tag of this here Dino-message.  Dino-loved and Dino-lovin', DMP

Tuesday, February 12, 20132ND FAVORITE DEAN MARTIN SHOW S.E DVD MOMENTS

MY 2ND FAVORITE MOMENT FROM "THE BEST OF THE DEAN MARTIN VARIETY SHOW:SPECIAL EDITION" DVD IS...

THE CLOSET MONTAGE

The show had so many unexpected things happening that the guests nor would Dean himself know what to except on this unrehearsed show. Best example is the Mystery Closet. During the show Dean would open the closet door and a guest would usually come out of there. If it wasn't a guest, you'd see some random and outrageous things. My favorite has to be when a full Marching Band is marching out the door. The only celebrity we see perform in this montage is Red Skelton mistaking for Dean show as the "Flip Wilson Show" and gives Dean a drink he made. That door is like a box of chocolates or a present, you never know what you're going to get or who's behind door number 1

Happy Dino-Amore Day! Dino's last TV Interview

You must have been warned against letting the golden hours slip by; but some of them are golden only because we let them slip by. ~James Matthew Barrie

After the cork is popped, wine poured, life’s last vino drop slides gullets way, we relish in the palisades of it's warm afterglow. Golden afterglows, embraced like loved ones in a dream, memories.

Stories. The cork, the cork has a story. As does the vino, the glass, and the bottle too! Oh if bottles could talk. Them's stories for another day, Pally.

Vintage 1917, hell of a vine to drop this grape, baby. Earthy, body full, hint of amore, leaves the pallet cool. This bottle 'o Dino been popped and celebrated.
Bottle dry, glass empty. Basking in Dino afterglow we are, baby.

This edition of Ed's Epistle is heavy on the golden afterglow of our Dino. Deep into the treasure chest of memories lies a lone VHS tape simply scribed, "Martin on Geraldo". There was no way of foretelling this historic moment that which seemed to have been lost to history without mention. Never have I heard mention of this Dino-moment, little lone a search, or request for it.

From time to time I would view the tape, at first not thinking much of its uniqueness. As time stretched out, it began to dawn on me that the Geraldo show may have been special. So I took a glance at the bible of Dino, A Complete Guide to the "Total Entertainer" and sure enough it was his last TV interview.

How strange, how rare, how historic. I thought by now in this day and internet age this clip would have surfaced. But is hasn't until now, only on our blog.

So this glorious Dino-casion of Dino-casions, we wish you a Happy Dino-Amore Day, and present to you

Dino's last television interview.
Geraldo Rivera, November 25, 1994. Dino on the horn, sharp, witty, cool. Enjoy.

Dean Martin

February 1, 2013

By scousegirl

Mr Martin had the quintessential Italian looks and swagger, having origins in that country on both sides of his family. Dean himself was born Dino Paul Crocetti in Ohio and grew up to be the super smooth comic and singer who men wanted to be and women just wanted. He was the epitome of cool and the Vegas Strip came alive in the 1950s and 1960s when Mr Martin and the other members of ‘The Rat Pack’ (Frank Sinatra, Peter Lawford, Joey Bishop, and Sammy Davis Jnr) were in town.

From his world-famous partnership with Jerry Lewis (one of the most celebrated comic collaborations ever on both stage and screen), to the iconic performances of ‘The Rat Pack’, and his own CBS variety show, Dean was a class act. Confident, charming and funny with those hot Italian features, what we think about Mr Martin in his heyday, now that is most definitely ‘Amore’

Tuesday, February 12, 2013

However, what really makes this moment stand out is Dean.

Hey pallies, likes we're gettin' really really close to Dino-amore day and likes I am thrilled to be able to offer you 'nother fav Dino-lovin' moment from our Dino-amorin' pallie, Mr. Tyler Michael at his self-taggged blog, " HOLLYWOOD MOVIES AND TV REVIEWS BY TYLER MICHAEL." Regular ilovedinomartin readers know that Ty has been puttin' the accent on our Dino in a huge huge way by sharin' his top dozen of fav of fav moments from "THE BEST OF THE DEAN MARTIN VARIETY SHOW:SPECIAL EDITION" dvd.

Likes today we are down to numero tres and Ty's stunnin' pick is a classic moment from the firstest of first Dino-peacock-netwark shows! It's our most beloved Dino with his bestest of best pallies croonin' a tune from that wonderful stage show "Guys And Dolls." Oh, how I wishes that our great man woulda played Sky Masterson opposite Mr. Sinatra's Nathan Detroit in the big screen production, but at least these two great pallies gets to croon this tune on the Dino-show!

Recently learned at Ty's blog that he is truly a real Deanager...just nineteen years of age...and absolutely absolutely totally totally devoted to our Dino. Likes it is always always so so refreshin' to find 'nother of today's youth who are smitten by our most beloved Dino...and not ashamed to share their Dino-devotion with the world.

3RD FAVORITE DEAN MARTIN SHOW S.E DVD MOMENTS

MY 3RD FAVORITE MOMENT FROM "THE BEST OF THE DEAN MARTIN VARIETY SHOW:SPECIAL EDITION" DVD IS...

DEAN AND FRANK SING "THE OLDEST ESTABLISHED"

This was originally going to be my number 1 favorite moment on the DVD but the moment I have in store as number 1 is a moment that gets funnier and funnier every time I watch it. So what's happening in this moment, it's Frank and Dean singing a classic musical number from "Guys And Dolls" called "The Oldest Established". First off, I love seeing two legends together singing a swinging tune and this was on the shows first episode. However, what really makes this moment stand out is Dean. He's stealing the spotlight with his singing and performing like he's drunk, he even almost trips while he's singing. This is a very rare occasion when someone steals the spotlight from Frank, even Elvis my all time favorite singer wasn't able to steal the spotlight while singing with Sinatra. The only disappointment is they cut out the whole part when they sing about the "Biltmore Garage" and Frank asks if Dean is dizzy. Neither the less it's still a great performance and was on the episode that started it all.

PHOTOS OF THE DAY: DEAN MARTIN AND FAMILY

When people hear the name Dean Martin, they instantly think of a carefree crooner who loved booze and women. That might be true of Frank Sinatra, but many people forget about Dean Martin the family man. He would much rather be at home with his children than out with cronies like Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. Dino was married three times. He was married to Elizabeth MacDonald from 1941 to 1949, Jeanne Biegger from 1949 to 1973, and to Catherine Hawn from 1973 to 1976. Out of those three marriages, Dino had seven children and one that he adopted. Here are some candid pictures from Dean Martin and family...
